Hybrid Security Staff

Among the many challenges faced by security and facilities managers is this; how to get the security staff, one of the businesses largest so-called sunk costs, to create value, add value, or save money.

In many cases security staff are both undervalued and under-utilised. There are many benefits to engaging with frontline staff, involving them at a far deeper level in the customer’s organisation – all of which result in more motivated, dedicated colleagues.

We’ve worked both as security staff and with security staff. We know better than anyone that the biggest threat to a security programme is boredom and the complacency it causes.

Engagement is the key. Allow security staff to contribute in a wider context, across disciplines, adding variety to their work, is a win : win : win. Everyone gains. And far from compromising the security operation, more engaged security staff equals better security staff, to the benefit of the core security operation.

Let’s do some maths.

Assume for the moment that certain routine (but important) compliance tests can be performed during the security staff’s regular patrols. Safety inspections, water temperature tests, flushing, fire door inspections, and the like. Assume further that your organisation is paying an outside contractor to do this work. Let’s call it 10 hours per week at £35 per hour.

Or £18,200 per annum.

What if the facilities manager could delegate some of the mundane tasks that could make them more effective themselves? What’s that worth?

And if the security staff can be first call responders to maintenance alarms out of hours and reset that glitchy gizmo that costs you £250-plus per call-out several times each month? None of this is rocket-science, it’s just good old-fashioned common sense. And we’ve proved its value many times.

Service Enhancement

The Hybrid Security Officer comes to know and appreciate the importance of every aspect of the operation and its management. They become familiar with and form close relationships with end-users or tenants, subcontractors and their senior FM team. They develop a more rounded understanding of how they fit in the pattern of the operation; they deliver better service.

Suppliers and subcontractors are properly supervised in their activities – their performance may improve as a result.

Simple fixes are learned and can be added to the Mobius responsibilities. A practical (and real) example; a building has a complex air conditioning system which is prone to regular service interruptions due to a minor electrical fault which cannot be traced. The fix is to reboot the system by following a particular sequence that requires no engineering expertise and which poses no risk to the individual performing the task. Mobius learns the fix and applies it on an as-needed basis – at no additional cost.

Reputational Improvement for Security

We have learned never to underestimate the importance of value-perception in security services.

Does the senior management know what the security team are doing? They generally don’t see the effort, industry and dedication. Is the function protected by being held in high regard? Or is it threatened by being generally ignored.

Sometimes it’s not the reality that counts but the perception.
